THE STORY OF LAJJHA

“It was born from curiosity. Shaped by experimentation. Made to be worn your way.”

Every brand begins somewhere. Lajjha began with a handful of clay, a curious mind, and a desire to create something with my own hands.

FROM A HANDFUL OF CLAY
TO HONEST METALS

Every piece carries a little bit of the journey that brought Lajjha here — from clay workshops and long hours of learning, to Kolkata's markets, countless experiments, material research, and the courage to change direction when something wasn't working.

A Handful of Clay & An Obsession to Learn

In 2016, I attended a clay jewelry workshop. What began as a simple workshop soon became an obsession with learning.

In 2018, I joined classes to understand the craft more deeply, learning different ways of moulding clay and transforming it into jewelry and decorative pieces. There was magic in taking raw, formless earth and giving it expression entirely with bare hands and patience.

[ २०१९ • FROM GRACE TO LAJJHA ]

The Reality of Handmade & A Rebirth

By 2019, that curiosity had turned into a small venture. At the time, the brand was called Grace, and I was making clay jewelry entirely by hand.

I loved the process, but I soon discovered the difficult reality behind handmade jewelry. Each piece took considerable time and effort to create, while customers often weren't willing to pay enough for the hours of work that went into it.

I knew I didn't want to stop creating. I simply needed to find a better way to create. That same year, Grace became Lajjha. The new name marked more than a change in identity. It represented the beginning of a new chapter, one where I could experiment, learn, and constantly reinvent what jewelry could be.

03Chapter 03: Exploring Kolkata markets & seeking consistency
[ कोलकाता बड़बाजार • THE SEARCH FOR LONGEVITY ]

Burrabazar & The Oxidized Challenge

I travelled to Kolkata's Burrabazar, explored the markets, and began working with oxidized charms, chains, and components.

I started designing and assembling oxidized jewelry, discovering a completely different world of textures, silhouettes, and possibilities. But once again, there was a problem.

Oxidized jewelry could be beautiful, but it could also be unpredictable. Depending on the material and finish, pieces could tarnish, lose their finish, darken unevenly, or develop rust/corrosion when exposed to moisture and improper storage. Maintaining consistency became difficult, especially when the goal was to create jewelry that people could enjoy for a long time.

Finding Substance: Brass & German Silver

So I went back to where Lajjha had always begun: research. Instead of accepting the limitations, I started looking for better materials.

That search led me to brass and German silver. Brass offered the warm, rich character I was looking for, while German silver offered a bright, versatile finish with the strength and workability needed for jewelry.

Both materials opened up far more creative possibilities and, with proper care and finishing, could offer better durability and longevity than many of the oxidized components I had previously been using. It changed the way I thought about Lajjha.

From 2023 onwards, I transformed the entire stock. Lajjha moved toward designing and creating jewelry primarily in brass and German silver while continuing to explore the colours, forms, motifs, and visual language of Indian craftsmanship.

[ आज की लज्जा • STYLE WITHOUT A RULEBOOK ]

Wear It Your Way

Today, Lajjha is a celebration of ethnic wear and jewelry for people who don't want to dress by a rulebook.

We believe traditional style doesn't have to mean traditional in every way. Pair an intricate necklace with a contemporary outfit. Wear statement earrings with something completely unexpected. Mix textures, experiment with layers, combine ethnic silhouettes with modern styling.

If it feels like you, it belongs with Lajjha.

Our audience is everyone, but especially those who see fashion as a form of experimentation rather than a set of instructions.

For us, jewelry isn't merely an accessory. It can change the mood of an outfit. It can become a signature. It can connect something contemporary to something deeply rooted in tradition.

And every piece carries a little bit of the journey that brought Lajjha here from clay workshops and long hours of learning, to Kolkata's markets, countless experiments, material research, and the courage to change direction when something wasn't working.

— The Philosophy of Lajjha
[ लज्जा का संकल्प • THE MANIFESTO ]

Lajjha is still learning.

Still experimenting.

Still moulding ideas into something you can wear.

Still giving metal a shape so that you can style it.

Because the story of Lajjha was never about finding one perfect style.

It was about discovering how many styles are possible.

FROM METAL
TO MOMENT

Every piece of jewellery we create carries a little part of the hands behind it. We take our time shaping every curve, adding every detail, and choosing every shade with care. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is mass-produced at Lajjha. Each piece is made by hand, with patience, love, and a little bit of imperfections that make handmade jewellery truly special. Because to us, jewellery isn't just something you wear; it's something you feel and attach your feelings to.

The Shaping

Every piece begins with German Silver Alloy, carefully chosen for its feel and its ability to hold beautiful and intricate textures. In the hands of our master artisans, the metal is slowly heated, hammered, and shaped. Each little mark, every uneven edge, and every subtle variation tells a story of the hands that made it. We don't try to hide these traces of the process; we let them remain, because we believe that's where the true beauty of handmade jewellery lies.

Before each piece of jewellery takes shape, respective alloy sheets are heated over an open fire to make them softer and easier to work with. This process helps the artisan shape the metal without causing cracks or damage. Using traditional wooden mallets and iron tools, the metal is carefully shaped by hand.

Every small curve, dent, and hammer mark is kept intentionally. Unlike mass-produced jewellery that looks perfectly smooth and identical, these natural details give each piece its own character. They reflect light beautifully from different angles and create a solid, rugged feel that you can see and feel in every piece.

The Detailing — Nakkashi

Using tools passed down through generations, intricate motifs are hand-stamped or engraved. This is where the piece gains its character—no two engravings are perfectly identical.

In historic artisan workshops, master craftsmen practice the heritage craft of nakkashi— chasing and repoussé. Armed with custom-tempered steel chisels (chheni) and miniature chasing hammers, they engrave motifs drawn from temple architecture, ancient jaali screens, floral creepers, and celestial geometry.

Without computer stencils or mechanical guides, each blow depends entirely on muscle memory, breath control, and decades of visual intuition of the artisan. Because the metal yields differently beneath every hammer strike, each piece carries its own unique rhythm and slight variations that can never be replicated by a machine.

The Finishing

Oxidation is treated not as a quick chemical coat, but as an aging process. Submerging the metal creates rich, charcoal-toned shadow in the recessed cavities, instantly accentuating every chisel stroke and stamped contour. Artisans then buff back the raised surfaces with river-sand stones and fine pumice to reveal luminous metallic highlights.

For pieces with colour, cold Meenakari enamel pigments—in deep rani pink, terracotta earth, peacock indigo, and forest teal—are inlaid droplet by droplet using ultra-fine sable brushes. The pieces are cured and sealed with a breathable micro-finish, ensuring the piece stays vibrant while naturally aging alongside you.

WHAT DEFINES LAJJHA

Honest Substance

We prioritize physical weight, solid alloy sheets, and honest character. From certified 92.5 sterling silver to warm raw brass and versatile German silver, our metals sit with reassuring density against the skin, rejecting hollow shortcuts.

Living Patina

Rather than synthetic flash electroplating that chips or peels away, our noble metals respond organically to air and skin, deepening their antique character and authentic heirloom story over the years.

Style Your Way

Traditional craft paired with modern rulebook-free styling. Intricate chokers with casual shirts, statement earrings with streetwear — fashion is a personal canvas of experimentation, not a set of instructions.
